The Totality of All Things is a play about seeing—really seeing—one another. Not the easy kind of seeing. Not the lowest-hanging fruit. But the harder work: looking past labels, assumptions, politics, and fear to recognize the human being standing in front of you.
This story is set in 2015, a year already thick with division, outrage, and uncertainty. And yet, sitting here today, it feels eerily present. The conversations haven’t changed much. The temperature might be higher. The stakes might feel heavier. But the central question remains the same: How do we find common ground when everything around us is designed to keep us apart?
In the rehearsal room, six actors came together—six different people, carrying six
different histories, perspectives, and truths. Just like their characters. The journey
of this production wasn’t about smoothing out those differences. It was about listening
to them. Sitting with discomfort. Resisting the urge to simplify one another. Choosing
curiosity over certainty. That process mirrors the world of the play itself. These
characters are not symbols or talking points. They are complicated, flawed, searching
human beings, trying—sometimes haphazardly, sometimes courageously—to connect. They
fail. They
misstep. They surprise one another. And in those moments, something honest breaks
through.
This play asks us to pause before we rush to judgment. To look again. To consider
that what divides us is often louder than what binds us—but not stronger. It invites
us to imagine what might happen if we led with empathy instead of fear, with listening
instead
of shouting.
Theatre, at its best, is a communal act. We sit together in the same room, breathing the same air, sharing the same story. For a brief moment, we agree to see through someone else’s eyes.
My hope is that The Totality of All Things offers that moment to you. That it nudges us all—artists, audience, citizens—to see one another more fully. And maybe, just maybe, to recognize ourselves in the process.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for leaning in. Thank you for bearing witness…
And thank you for choosing to SEE.
