LSU - Shaping the Future Together

Transforming the Flagship for Louisiana

For more than 160 years, LSU has evolved to meet the needs of its time. That evolution has taken many forms, each shaped by the needs of Louisiana and guided by a commitment to excellence:

  • 1860– Founded as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy
  • 1887– Establishment of the first agricultural experiment station.
  • 1931– LSU School of Medicine opens (origin of LSU Health New Orleans)
  • 1969– LSU Health Shreveport established
  • 1972– LSU Agricultural Center formed.
  • 1988– Launch of Pennington Biomedical Research Center to advance cutting‑edge health research
  • 1997– LSU System assumes responsibility of state’s safety net hospital system
  • 2013– Major systemwide consolidation strengthening coordination and shared services; privatization of safety net hospitals’ operations under LSU System monitoring.
  • 2025– LSU Board initiates restructuring to unify and elevate the research enterprise and position itself for increased national prominence and student success.

Each chapter reflects the same enduring truth: when a university is committed to excellence, it adapts, grows, and reimagines itself to serve a bigger purpose. The passage of time also means the modes of communication and transportation have altered the variables that drove the adaptations.

Today, LSU is entering a new and extraordinary moment defined by opportunity, ambition, and shared purpose.

This Flagship Transformation Initiative brings together the Baton Rouge campus, LSU Health New Orleans, LSU Health Shreveport, the LSU AgCenter, and Pennington Biomedical Research Center into a juggernaut for advancing discovery, serving communities, educating students, providing world-class patient care, and improving lives throughout Louisiana and far beyond. The alignment effort now underway builds on that strength. It is about bringing our collective talent, ideas, and resources together in new and more intentional ways so that LSU can thrive in a rapidly changing world.

At its heart, this effort is built upon the belief in LSU’s potential and in the power of collaboration. By working together, we can build a university that is stronger than the sum of its parts, offering greater opportunity for its people, delivering even more impact for Louisiana, and contributing meaningfully to the nation and the world.

This is not change for change’s sake. It is a thoughtful, deliberate step toward a future-facing LSU: a university built for a new era, shaped by its people, and grounded in an unbounding, unwavering pursuit of excellence for our students, faculty, staff, and citizenry.

Why Transform, Why Now

LSU’s research strength has long been distributed across multiple institutions, each with its own proud history, mission, and accomplishments. Individually, these campuses do great work. Together, they represent one of the most powerful research enterprises in the region – one poised for exponential growth through leveraging its collective strengths.

The alignment effort is designed to:

  1. Create a University that is greater than the sum of its parts and operates at a higher level than the status quo,
  2. Build connectivity to create new or first-of-its-kind academic programs,
  3. Grow research productivity to accrue the benefits of national-caliber research for Louisiana,
  4. Heighten LSU’s national standing, which will attract more high-quality students, faculty, and staff to participate in our academic community.
  5. Ensure that Louisiana receives full credit for its support of research and higher education through elevated perception and increased impact on its citizenry.

Our goal is not consolidation for its own sake, but intentional alignment so that every part of LSU is lifted, strengthened, and positioned to thrive.

How the Work is Being Done

To guide the beginning of this effort – which will not be short-lived – LSU has launched a series of committees and task forces composed of faculty, staff, and leaders from across the University. These groups are charged with exploring opportunities, identifying risks, and developing thoughtful recommendations to inform leadership decisions and knit together solutions that will give every campus a voice in the next steps of our evolution.

At this stage, there are no predetermined outcomes. The work is exploratory, collaborative, and grounded in LSU’s mission and values.

Importantly, the committee structure is not a comprehensive or final list. It represents a starting point designed to ensure we ask the right questions, hear diverse perspectives, and pursue the best path forward for the university, rather than change for change’s sake. As new challenges or opportunities are identified, we plan to stand up additional committees and task forces to meet evolving needs.  Likewise, some of those committees starting now will adapt or complete their role more quickly than others.

Transparency and Ongoing Updates

We are committed to keeping the LSU community informed throughout this process. Updates on committee and task force progress will be shared at regular intervals through this site and other university communications.

Feedback and questions are welcome, and we will continue to refine our approach based on what we learn along the way. If you have questions, please send them to LSUTransform2026@lsu.edu.

Our Shared Opportunity

This alignment effort represents a rare opportunity to shape LSU’s future with intention, ambition, and care. Together, we are building a university that honors its collective history while positioning itself for a new era of impact.

By working collaboratively and thoughtfully, we can ensure LSU emerges stronger, more connected, and better equipped to serve its people, its state, its country, and the world.

This will be beneficial to all, but it will involve change. We are committed to keeping our constituencies informed on our progress, but we do ask for everyone to remember that change is challenging, growth is hard, and acceptance tends to be slower than resistance. We are going to work with everyone who cares about LSU to get to the best possible decision for our future. We look forward to raising expectations for our university and then celebrating our successes together. Geaux Tigers!
